I’m my own boss. But I need help from time to time and I’m not afraid to admit it. I own my own business and it is a messy business at the best of times. It is extremely unusual for a woman to own a meat house but it was passed down to my father and I’m the only child. I originally wanted to get into law but after a year of law school, I hated it. I wasn’t sure what I was going to be. My father always said I could come work for him. But it wasn’t my idea of a great job.
That all changed when he retired. He wanted to keep the business in the family since it was passed down to him. Our customers had been doing business with us for years for that very reason we were family owned and local. This was a major reason I took over ownership. Well, that and I had no other career to turn to.
My problem is – and it’s huge – that the Vancouver health ordinance keeps coming down on me for unhygienic premises because the company I hired is costing me an arm and a leg but doing half a job.
The office space needs to be cleaned and is overrun with roaches. I can’t stand roaches. They make my hair stand on end. Plus – I don’t want to provide my customers with food that I won’t eat, knowing where these roaches have been. If there is one thing that can kill a food business, it’s not having a clean kitchen free of rats, mice and other bugs.
The maids are Filipino which obviously does not create a good impression for customers or staff for that matter. It makes it look like slave labour. Their maids cleaning methods fall far short of anything that can be described as a personal best and everything is covered in dust in the middle of winter. How on earth is that possible? The short answer is that it isn’t. This dust has been there since last summer and like a frog in cold water I have just become accustomed to it to the point where I thought it was a new trend in interior design.
The services I have used to be good and easily affordable but now they are costing me more money to employ than they are worth. They arrive late and leave early. Never mind the offices, the butchers are even complaining about the circumstances in the meat house – and they work with meat. I have learned many things in business and one of them is to ensure your employees are happy. So I had to make sure my butchers in the back were happy.
Fortunately for me I have a good friend with OCD or is that COD? She is constantly cleaning her home and when she visits, she starts in on mine. This is obviously a great friend to have when time is so limited. I will call her Vera to protect her from those who would abuse her. So Vera stopped by the other day and was talking about hiring cleaning services, as she just can’t get the spots off her recliner. Huh? I couldn’t help wondering how that was possible. She is a fanatic at the best of times and it was unimaginable to me how she couldn’t get a simple spot out of her pristine furniture. Then I realised that it was part of who she is and I love her for it. What I love even more is that she mentioned Brilliant Cleaning Services. They have wonderful staff that show up on time and don’t leave early. Their standards of cleanliness are through the roof and what one would expect when hiring a professional cleaning company.
Yes, I know it sounds like a cliché but when you’re in a tight spot and need an exceptional intervention I’ll opt for a quick, efficient and environmentally friendly cleaning specialists every day of the week!
