How To Survive The Scorching Heat In The Office
When the summer temperatures exceed the 30-degree mark, the conditions in the office premises can become downright unbearable. This has a direct influence on the employees’ focus, mood and productivity. However, if you make intelligent use of the available resources, you can transform your business quarters into a more pleasant and comfortable working environment. Here are a few suggestions how you can change your office routine to make it more summer-proof.
Shades are your Friends
During long, scorching summer days, it’s essential that you put up your blinds or shades, even when the workers are not in the office. This means blinds should stay closed during the weekend and at night as well, which will effectively cool down the space. Make sure the employees are acquainted with this practice.
Close the Windows During Heat Peaks
Contrary to popular belief, keeping windows constantly open during the day in an attempt to air and cool the room will actually make the office warmer and stuffier. Throughout extremely hot periods, doors and windows should be closed after the baking heat starts to replace the cool morning air, which is around 9 or 10 AM. This can be a challenging task as many people have the urge to pop up a window in these conditions.
AC Matters
The best way to ensure a constant room temperature and air flow is by installing a quality AC system. Still, abstain from setting the temperature to unreasonably low values. When picking a unit for your office, favour the energy-preserving models with special settings for dehumidification, ozone disinfection and hypoallergenic mode for extra comfort. Lastly, don’t forget to commit to regular air conditioning servicing and repairs to preserve optimal functionality of the device.
Smart Management of Electrical Devices
A great number of electrical devices you can find in the office building generate heat, and that’s the last thing you need in the summer. Machines like fax, printers and scanners, as well as computers and monitors are either constantly on or in a standby mode, which quickly heats up the room.
Review which devices can be turned off throughout the day and keep everything in the offices that are not used. Also, make use of the on/off switch on the extension cord and shut it down completely after hours, except for the server rooms and similar facilities.
Flextime
If the nature of your business allows it, offer flexible working hours to your staff during extremely hot days. Introduce this handy benefit to your employees and observe how their happiness levels and productivity soar. This may include an early start of the working day (when the air is still cool), longer lunchtime periods (so-called siestas) and additional evening tasks they can finish at home.
More Relaxed Dress Code
There’s nothing worse than a full suit ensemble on a tropical day. On the dates when you don’t expect visits from clients and investors, you can loosen up the rules a bit and allow short-sleeved shirts for men and sandals for women. Some companies that usually follow a business casual code can allow elegant t-shirts (both men and women) and capris (for men).
Icy Beverages and Delights
Apart from having a free source of fresh and pure water, it’s recommendable to provide your workers with some icy goods in the summer months. This will act as a temporary but sweet heat relief. Cold water and juices will keep the workers hydrated and more equipped to withstand the sizzling conditions.
Additionally, you can surprise them sometimes with icy treats, such as frozen yogurt or ice cream. This will give them a necessary energy boost and refreshing sensation, as well as improve their attitude and motivation.
After-hour Team Building
There’s no better way to unwind and charge up the batteries for the next working day than by chilling and grilling after sundown. Invite your employees to the nearby pool or beach to strengthen your team’s spirit and prepare them for the rest of the week.
Workdays can become quite long and tiring in the offices that haven’t optimised their temperature management. Follow our simple advice and make your office environment a pleasant and happy place for all employees.
