>Relaxing massage: is there really such a thing? I’ve heard a few of stories about people going to spas for a massage and the common complain have always been that instead of ending up relaxed, they find themselves sore all over the following day. What could have gone wrong?

What Is A Massage?

Massage generally involves pressing specific parts of the body with the use of the hands, the fingers, the elbows, and sometimes, the feet. Massage also uses rubbing technique and the manipulation of soft tissues and muscles.

For the longest time, massage has been practiced by so many people from all over the world. It has been in existence for a very long time and has been practiced by a lot of people from different countries.

At present, there are more than eighty (80) different styles of massage therapy which uses five common parts of the body during the actual massage: the hands, the fingers, the forearms, the elbows, and the feet. There are varied massage techniques, movements, and pressures.

So why do people get a massage? Well, these people believe that massage can help them get relief from common symptoms of illnesses. They also get a massage to heal injuries such as from sprains and muscle tension and spasm. People also get a massage because they believe that massages can help them with certain health conditions. Then there are those who believe that massages promote general wellness.

So Why Do People End Up Sore All Over After A Massage?

There are many types of massages and in order to get the best result, one must have the correct massage one needs or wants. Not getting the right massage will give someone a sore body afterwards, this is guaranteed. So before going to a massage therapist, it will be well to know the different styles of massage and then know what kind of massage you need.

Generally, there are two most common styles for massage therapy. First uses the long, smooth strokes and second uses the short, percussive strokes. For better results, some massage therapists use lotions and oils, but of course the patient/client may always ask the therapist not to use any if preferred. A normal massage can last anywhere between 5 minutes to 2 hours.

The Most Popular Massage: Swedish Massage

The most popular type of massage is Swedish massage therapy. This type of massage uses soft, long, kneading strokes, and light, rhythmic, tapping strokes. Massage therapists also use joint movements for better results. Swedish massage is perfect for relieving muscle tension and is well known for its relaxing and energizing effect.
