Accidents Happen: What to Do If Someone Runs Over Your Child

No one ever thinks it’s going to happen to them. Unfortunately, there are times when circumstances are out of your control, and your worst nightmare comes true. Your child is hit by a car and you don’t know what to do.

After seeking immediate medical attention, you need some way to recover emotionally and financially. Even the best health insurance plans may not cover everything.

Read on to learn what you need to do if your child is run over:

What to Do When Your Child Is Hit

If your child is hit, the liability on whether the driver was negligent. In scenarios where a driver knows there are children, such as a park or school, they are required to be more cautious of their surroundings.

This also applies to people who reside in residential neighborhoods where children are also visible. If your child is hit by a vehicle, questioning who is at fault isn’t the same as when an adult is hit.

Here are three possible reasons why this may occur. For example, small children are not legally held accountable for their actions. Secondly, the standard depends on if the child displayed the same care expected from one of a similar experience, intelligence and age. Finally, young children are more easily distracted than adults are, so having a brief shift in awareness does not make the child legally responsible.

If your child is hit, you must contact an injury attorney. They’ll help you with everything if you plan to take legal action against the driver that hit them. Most likely the careless driver is someone in your neighborhood or another mom at school. You may be tempted to gloss things over because the experience is sure to be traumatic for everyone involved. However, hospital bills and injuries that may not be present right now will pile up. Don’t feel ashamed for protecting your family even in an accident.

Steps to Take to Protect Your Child

As a parent, you can take preventative measures to ensure that something like this never happens. Here are a few things you can do to ensure your child’s safety:

Keep an Eye on Your Child

A very common reason as to why children get hit is due to child negligence. In other words, not paying enough attention to what your child is doing can have severe consequences. In fact, all it takes is one second for something bad to happen. One way to keep your child safe is to have them play in a secure area.

Let Your Child Know the Dangers of the Road

It’s your responsibility and obligation to educate your children on road safety. This means telling them that being near the open road is dangerous no matter where they are. If your child’s favorite toy ends up going into the road, make sure they know to tell you.

Be Mindful of Your Own Driving

As a driver yourself, you also must be diligent while on the road as well. Make sure to check your rearview mirrors to see if there are any children behind your vehicle. Children are very small, so it’s easy not to see them as you turn the corner.

The mere thought of a child is terrifying enough, but having it actually happen is earth-shattering. Remember to keep your child in close proximity at all times and educate them right. Doing so will not only ensure their safety but also give peace of mind.
