Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a great form of self-defense, and actually evolved in the states as a way for citizens to defend themselves in areas where police protection was insufficient relative to the crime rate. Some areas of New York meet this description, and NY BJJ is a great way to gain self-defense techniques while getting and staying fit. What exactly is involved in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training?
Classes
Classes may be divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Sometimes however, mixed classes are available in an effort to help the more advance learn by teaching, and the beginners learn from the more advanced. Ronin Athletics offers many NY BJJ classes for all levels of experience, and they can work with you to ensure that you know how to react in case of an attack.
Warm Up
As with any physical activity, it is necessary to warm up the muscles before getting started so to avoid injury. With BJJ, this portion of the class may include standard warm up exercises as well as those directly related to the sport. It may also include exercises that attempt to hone your focus before training begins, as this is a major part of any martial arts related sport.
BJJ Training
Beginners start with the basic moves and work up to using those moves in a sparring scenario. This typically includes learning and repeating basic kicks and punches in an effort to perfect them, while all the time adding layers of harder combinations of kicks and punches. The benefit of mixed experience levels in class can be seen here, as the more experienced have an opportunity to practice the basics and keep their foundation solid, and the less experience have the benefit of seeing what the results of their hard work can and should be.
Cool Down
This is another standard with any physical activity that is designed to help avoid injury. Muscles are slowly relaxed and stretched so that a return normal physical doesn’t send them into shock. There may also be some focus related activities in this section of the training as well, designed to help students remember the reason they are training in the first place.
