The Pros and Cons Of Granite Countertops

The Pros and Cons Of Granite Countertops

If you like the cool look of the granite countertops, it might inspire you to duplicate the elegance in your own home. However, you need to know some things when considering granite countertops for your kitchen.

Granite countertops are quite expensive. You may not be able to avoid as many trips to your favorite day spa as you are accustomed to if you choose granite for your kitchen remodel. On average, expect to pay at least $100 per square foot of counter space. This includes measurement, fabrication, sink cutouts and installation, but does not include backsplashes, sinks, and plumbing. Ceramic tiles are much less expensive than granite, let alone laminates. However, granite countertops are definitely on a different class altogether, and may be well worth the investment as they last for a long time.

Granite is a natural stone, so it is pretty much what you see is what you get. You cannot customize a design or color to suit your color scheme. You can only choose from what is available and hope there is enough available for what you need. On the other hand, each granite slab is unique. No to slabs are exactly alike, even those that come from the same quarried block.

Granite is porous, so it needs a seal right after installation to prevent seepage and staining. It is also necessary to keep it dry and clean of all acids, grease, and oil. It also needs to be resealed once every year or so, depending on the use. To offset these, granite is very durable. It will last far longer than you will if it receives regular maintenance as per the fabricator’s recommendations.

There is no question that granite countertops are beautiful and elegant. It adds value to the home, and its durability makes it a favorite of homeowners. However, it is always best to know what you are getting into before you make a decision.
