4 Ideas For What To Do With Your Basement

Are you lucky enough to have a basement in your property? I moved into my home three years ago and I was completely baffled what to do with mine – I had a lot of ideas but I didn’t know whether to make it a practical or leisure space for me and my family. There are pretty good reasons for both, which is why I thought I’d share a few of my ideas with you. So whether you’ve just moved in, or have lived in your home for a while, it’s time to make your cellar into a useable space!

A study

The first thing you could consider is a study area or home library – this is especially useful if you work from home full or part time. There are a few things to consider though such as basement waterproofing and air quality; you’ll want to be able to breathe easily and safely whilst you’re hard at work. Even if you don’t work from home, a study area can useful as an adult hideout; be thinking along the lines of retreating there for some quiet time with a newspaper or a book, or even just a place to do your tax return in peace.

A playroom

If you already have a study area in your home, you might be looking for a space for your kids instead. There are all kinds of ways you could make a chill out area for your children, and many things that you could include four fun and furnishings. If the space is big enough, think about an air hockey table or a pool table; you’ll be able to use it from time to time too which doubles the benefits!

A guest bedroom

Another idea is actually converting the space into a guest bedroom. It is likely that your room will not get used as often as a study or a playroom, but it does have its practicalities. Firstly, if you are having family visit, it means you don’t need to find a nearby hotel or B&B to put them up. Or if you usually make your kids share a bedroom when you have a guest, this will save lots of tantrums and tears! You might also be able to increase the value of your home by putting in another bedroom, so it’s worth doing the job properly, perhaps with an en-suite bathroom.

A party space

There is another way you can incorporate house visitors into your basement conversion plans though – why not make a party area? There are all types of things you can look into, including soundproofing. These changes will help you to be able to enjoy the space fully without worrying about annoying your neighbors! What you do in order to change it into a party zone is up to you, but it might be worth thinking of lighting, music systems and areas for games.
