Top 10 Sports Venues In Australia

Australia is synonymous with sport, having individuals or teams that operate at the highest levels of virtually every competitive pursuit on Earth. One key aspect of great sporting performance and the building of a legacy is the venues that sports use. These are more than mere stadiums and arenas, they are theatres where people immortalise themselves, and members of the public witness something that they will one day tell their children and grandchildren about.
We looked at the top ten sports venues across Australia, and briefly explain why each made the list.

1. Melbourne Cricket Ground

Globally this 100,000+ capacity stadium is probably most famous for hosting the Boxing Day Cricket Test, while at home it is also a popular Aussie Rules arena as well as a stop on most concert tours.

2. Stadium Australia

This arena is perhaps best known as the Olympic Stadium from Sydney 2000, but today is used predominantly for Rugby League and Aussie Rules.

3. Hindmarsh Stadium

This makes the list for being one of the few venues used exclusively for soccer in Australia, and it’s relatively modest 17,000 capacity is regularly filled by tenants Adelaide United.

4. Rod Laver Arena

One of Australia’s favourite sons lends his name to the famous tennis court in Melbourne Park, home to the first Grand Slam event of the year. This stadium is famous for its raucous atmosphere, as well as its retractable roof that is used when temperatures soar.

5. Sydney Super Dome

Although this is currently used for netball as well as being a multi-purpose entertainment venue, in recent years it has housed basketball as well as tennis, hosting the ATP World Tour finals when Lleyton Hewitt was at the height of his powers.

6. Docklands Stadium

Melbourne’s second stadium is this stunning piece of architecture, which in addition to being a world-class sports venue is also the headquarters of the Australian Football League administration.

7. Sydney Cricket Ground

This popular stadium has seen its fair share of history making moments through the years in many sports, but perhaps one of the finest was in 2007 when Australia regained The Ashes from England, completing a 5-0 whitewash and heralding the retirements of a number of Australian cricket legends.

8. Kardinia Park

‘The Cattery’ is one of the best purpose built Aussie Rules ovals in the country, generating a fearsome atmosphere like no other as resident club Geelong take to the field for home games.

9. The Gabba

Yet another multi-purpose stadium joins the list, with cricket and Aussie Rules gracing this brilliant stadium in a beautiful suburb of Brisbane.

10. Perth Arena

This recently opened venue is used predominantly for basketball, but is set to become a major centre of the Perth community in years to come, and will undoubtedly host a number of international sporting events in that time, too.
