Things In Your Home That Attract Pests

Pests are animals and insects that cause damage in our homes and properties. They mercilessly attack livestock, food and crops and destroy the lives and businesses of people. Apart from being a nuisance, they can also cause harm and disease to our bodies.

There are things in our homes that attract pests of all kinds. We unknowingly attract pests in our homes with the things we own and keep. Here are some of the things in our homes that attract pests.

1. Clutter

Pests love clutter especially rubbish and garbage in unsealed bags. Aside from these, paper, plastics and other piles of different items attract rats, cockroaches and other insects. Keep your things in order and in sealed containers. Unwashed plastic and glass containers that used to hold food also attract ants and cockroaches. Make sure you clean and dispose items that you plan to recycle before keeping them.

2. Food

Like humans, pests are attracted to food and their odors. Unsealed containers of food, crumbs, and spilled drinks attract all sorts of animals and insects like cockroaches, ants, rodents, and bugs.

3. Moisture

Check your house for any leaks that may trap moisture. Moist places are ideal for termites which will slowly destroy your home and furniture. Disease-carrying mosquitoes usually breed in stagnant water so make sure your pails, pots, and other receptacles do not have trapped water.

4. Lights

Lights attract different sorts of flying pests like flies and gnats.

5. Pets

Your pet’s feces attract different sorts of pests so it is best to immediately clean them out. Do not let them sit on your homes for long. Pet food also attracts pests so keep them sealed and kept properly. The fur of cats and dogs also attract bed bugs. Make sure you bathe your pets on a regular basis.

6. Tiny cracks and crevices

The tiny cracks and crevices in your homes are shelter to different sorts of pests. Inspect your house for cracks and address them immediately.

7. Wood

Wood, especially damp wood, attracts termites that can potentially destroy your home. Termites feed on cellulose which is a component of wood. Wooden structures, furniture, wood paneling, stumps, vines, mulches and firewood are all susceptible to termite infestation.
