Designing a nursery that supports your baby’s growth and development is more important than simply choosing adorable bedding and furnishings. My husband and I used to obsess over Pinterest and design magazines while we were expecting our first kid, envisioning the ideal nursery. For our child, we wanted to design an environment that was not just lovely but also secure, peaceful, and engaging.
Contrasting Colours
Accent walls are a fantastic way to introduce contrast in a nursery, providing distinct spaces for various purposes. Another idea is to apply two shades of the same colour, one lighter and one darker. Different colours assist your little one in recognising contrasts and even beginning to comprehend various shapes. Our wall decals and art prints at Olli+Lime are perfect for adding depth to your nursery walls.
Textures and Textiles
Another way to make the nursery visually engaging is by incorporating different textures. This can enhance your baby’s visual experience as well as support their sense of touch. Examples include a soft rug, a velvet blanket, artificial grass as a little indoor outdoor area, and other materials such as leather and chenille.

What About Your Space?
Establishing a calming environment is essential for both you and your baby. Parents need their own space to unwind too! As the saying goes, if you are stressed, it’s like the baby is also stressed. If you have an empathetic baby, they will likely feel exactly how you feel so you want to ensure that whether it’s within their nursery or just outside you have a space to not have it together and to relax. Being a mother, especially a new mother, can be overwhelming. Be sure that you take these minutes out of the day to get it all out.
Sensory Stimulation
With new research coming out all the time and new toys, there are so many ways to create an entertainingly stimulating environment for your children. Try new things with them often and you will soon find out what they love and what they are not too keen on, allowing you to continually add, replace and evolve their room into the perfect stimulating, safe space.
Safety First
There are loads of safety precautions that could be implemented but my few favourite tips include that anything hanging over the crib is double, even triple-checked for being safely attached, and also pictures and nursery decor are set up on walls away from the crib. If this isn’t what you want, be sure to leave a gap between the wall and the crib in case anything falls; it misses the baby’s crib.
A Personal Touch
Remember, the most important aspect of a nursery is that it feels safe, loving, and welcoming for both you and your baby. Enjoy the process of creating a special space for your little one to grow and thrive.
This is where the magic truly happens. We incorporated cherished family heirlooms—a rocking chair that belonged to my grandmother and a hand-knitted blanket from my aunt. We displayed framed photos of loved ones and included a small gallery wall of inspiring quotes. We even painted a whimsical mural on one wall featuring whimsical creatures from our favourite children’s books. These personal touches made the nursery feel truly special and unique to our family.
Final Thoughts
There are so many things that you can do to make your nursery a stimulating, organised and safe space, but it all doesn’t end there. Changes to both home and garden features are ready for them to grow into. It will be a journey but a fun one at that!
