Kings Cross used to have a bit of a reputation for being – how shall we say? – lively. These days it has definitely moved on and while it’s no longer a dangerous part of the city, it is lively in a very different way. It is now very much the party and entertainment area of the city and one that any backpacker or visitor to Sydney needs to check out.
If you’ve already secured your place in a Kings Cross backpacker hostel, then the next thing you need to think about is where to head for of an evening to soak up the best atmosphere, killer tunes and for a bit of a boogie. Here’s a list of a few essential nightspots not to miss.
# The Bourbon
You could be forgiven for mistaking this place for a bar in the New Orleans French quarter. This place simply oozes character and charm and has a distinctly retro yet extravagant feel.
# Dive Bar
Ok, so you might think that a bar called the Dive might not be the best place to go for a night out but this self-styled late-night bar has the feel of a speakeasy, complete with bar room games, poker tables and a killer jukebox. A top spot for a (very) late night drink.
# FBi Social
One thing that had been missing from the scene was an incredible live music venue. Not any more, as FBi Social stepped in to fill the void. Live music had been missing from KC but with top gigs and the hippest new bands taking to the stage, this is the place for the real live feel.
# Gazebo Wine Garden
This is a place that lacks pretension and has loads of charm. More sedate than some of the bars around but with a more sophisticated feel. The outside vibe complete with 80s classics gives this a very grown up atmosphere. Perfect if you’re in the mood for something a little more upmarket.
# Kit and Kaboodle
Upstairs from the Sugarmill you’ll find this bar sprawling over two floors. It’s a place where the drinks are the real star. The bartenders can knock up just about anything you can possibly imagine, with a well stocked bar for creating their masterpieces.
