5 Spring-Cleaning Tips To Get It Done Quicker

5 Spring-Cleaning Tips To Get It Done Quicker

Spring has arrived, so are you ready to give your home a top-to bottom clean? Begin by focusing your efforts on the big pieces and on the places that make the biggest difference to you, such as furniture and carpeting. Once you’ve covered these major tasks, you’ll have your home spring-cleaned in no time.

5 Spring-Cleaning Tips To Get It Done Quicker

Make Doormats Feel Welcoming

Give them a shake, a good wash and swat with a broom. Give them the toughest cleaning they can take. They’re your front line against tracked in dirt, so keep them clean enough to work at the highest levels.

Clean Carpets and Upholstery

Fabrics that have absorbed a winter’s worth of dirt, body oil, and germs will require a deep cleaning to get them ready for another year of wear.

When you’re shampooing carpets or cleaning upholstery with a carpet cleaner (available to rent), practice first in a low key area to make sure you have the knack of the machine and that the treatment won’t discolour the fabrics or cause dyes to run. Save time by moving furniture just slight (not out of the room or against the wall as old rules dictate) and place the legs of each piece back on top of small wax paper squares after shampooing. The wax paper is there to protect your carpet and keep the furniture legs from getting wet as the carpet is drying. Let the windows open to speed up the drying process, which can take a day or more usually. If you don’t consider yourself the furniture shifting/machine renting type, make it easier on yourself and call in a professional carpet and upholstery cleaner to do the work for you.

Finish Your Floors

In an effort to protect the floors in your kitchen from another year of wear and tear, apply a sealer following directions or use wax. The easiest method would be to use a combination of wash and wax floor cleaner. There’s no need to feel bad for saving time.

No-wax floors don’t require a polishing treatment, but the occasional makeover will keep them looking fresher. Also add a protective buffer that could help them last longer. Use a floor cleaner that cleans, shines or both! It is best practice to follow the label directions for correct use of each product. If you have wood floors, move your furniture and rugs, then apply a wood cleaner and either liquid or paste polish to clean and add a new wax coating.

Wash Cabinets, Baseboards, Woodwork and Walls

The walls may not initially seem like they need a wash, since most dust and soot falls to the floor, however just enough clings to vertical surfaces to qualify for a seasonal or preholiday bath. Use a sponge and hand dishwashing detergent and wash the surface in sections. A sponge mop can make it easier to reach higher spots. Make two buckets, one for dishwashing detergent solution and another for wringing your sponge. Don’t forget to dry the walls and woodwork with a clean cloth.

Vacuum Smartly

The old rules dictate that you go through the labour-intensive task of dragging every stick of furniture off the carpet, just so the hoover could cover every nook and cranny. Newer rules say will save you some time, and you’ll still get the corner-to-corner cleaning completed. Just move those bigger items a little out of the way. Vacuum the area that was occupied by furniture and then move it back where you want it.
