4 Tips For Making Your Wardrobe More Sustainable

Everyone is trying to make more of an effort to make their wardrobe more sustainable, but often are unsure where to start. So, we are here with a few tips for making your wardrobe more sustainable! These are really simple tips that will help the environment and also save you a lot of money!

Repurpose What You Have

The most eco-friendly thing you can do is to wear the clothes you already have and not buy anymore, but if you don’t love some of your clothing and are thinking about throwing it away, it’s time to get creative and repurpose it. This might mean styling it in a completely new way that you have never tried before with things you already have in your wardrobe or you could try your hand at sewing to make it a slightly different fit! This could be cropping it slightly or adding some embellishments.

Before you go to buy new clothes, take a real good look at what you have in your wardrobe and drawers, as you might find pieces you forgot about and fall in love all over again!

Wash Your Clothes Less

Our next tip is to wash your clothes less! The more that you wash your clothes, the more strain that they are put under and the more dye is removed, so they last much less time if you are washing them all the time. Plus, you are using lots of electricity which is going to be costing you a lot of money!

So, simply only wash your clothes when they really need washing. Jeans should barely ever be washed and things like jumpers only need to be washed every 4-5 wears. Other items like underwear will of course need to be washed more often for hygiene reasons, but just try to keep your washing to a minimum and your clothes and the planet will thank you for it!

Buy Second Hand

Another thing you can do if you are looking for new clothes is to buy second hand. Aside from just keeping the clothes you already have, buying second hand is the next best thing. You are not contributing to the damage made by major fashion companies or the wasted electricity and water needed to make new pieces, as those processes have already been done and you are helping to prevent the demand for it to happen again. Instead, you are rehoming clothes that will still be in fantastic condition, you can afford to buy better quality clothing as second hand is cheaper and you will be saving money!

Go online to places like Depop and Vinted, or go into local vintage and charity shops, and you’ll be surprised at the hidden gems that you find.

Buy Good Quality From Sustainable Companies

If you are going to buy new clothing, make sure that you are buying good quality clothing from companies who are open about their commitments to the environment. Look for companies who offer organic ranges that are exceptional quality like Gods Gift, or those who have clearly emphasised what they are doing to become more eco friendly.

A perfect example is Levi’s, who make fantastic quality jeans with great craftsmanship. The price point is higher than most other highstreet options, but they use the most sustainable processes and materials possible. Also, if your jeans are ever damaged, they will repair them for free for LIFE. They are clearly very passionate about the environment and their commitment to it, shown by the fact they will happily repair the jeans rather than encouraging you to buy a new pair. Do a bit of research before making a purchase and it will definitely benefit you in the long run.
