How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

The most important thing to do when thinking of having laser hair removal in Vancouver is conducting some thorough research on the business. You’ll want it to be a business that has fully qualified technicians with excellent references. A nail salon that does laser hair removal is probably not the best choice in this case. Some spas that offer laser hair removal as another service may have technicians that are actually masseuses and not fully trained laser technicians. A visit before you book an appointment may reveal they use old and outdated technology.
Once you’ve done your research and chosen a qualified laser hair removal salon here are some things to do as you prepare for your first appointment.

Stay out of the sun – Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin in the hair shafts then it travels down the hair shaft where it is converted to heat and damages or destroys the hair follicle. Since melanin is responsible for the color in your hair and skin spending time in the sun before your sessions will darken the skin when it’s exposed to UV radiation. In order for lasers to target the unwanted hair the wavelength used should differ dramatically from the skin color. Avoiding being out in the sun for six weeks prior to a session allows there to be a contrast between the color of the hair and the color of the skin.
No bronzers – The reason once again is to have the skin as light as possible so suspend the use of any sunless bronzer products you might use otherwise.
Don’t pluck or wax – The hair needs to be left undisturbed and doing it’s own thing not expecting to be exposed to laser energy. One month prior to the first session stop and plucking, waxing or electrolysis you ordinarily have.
Don’t take blood thinners – Suspend the use of any medications than can thin your blood and can cause bruising as a result of treatment. This includes anti inflammatories and certain supplements.
Shave the day before – The hair follicle itself is not disturbed by shaving and only removes the hair above the skin. When you shave the day before a session removing the hair above the skin this will prevent the hair from lightly burning the skin as the laser energy converts to heat in the hair shaft. The technician wants the laser energy to only go down into the hair follicle.
