Things You Should Do When You Are Pulled Over

It’s quite intimidating when you see the dreaded red and blue light flashing. It is likely that your heart is racing and you become quite nervous. This could happen even to the most vigilant and law abiding drivers. It is certainly quite stressful when we are being pulled over. When it happens, you should make sure that you can prevent any kind of serious infraction and even if you are doing things wrong, hopefully the officer will let you go and only give you a stern warning. It is actually quite common for police officers to pull over a car and this shouldn’t be an overly distressing situation. This could happen when the plate registration has been expired and you are driving over the speed limit. When you have a bit too much beer from the local pub and you are now behind the wheel, the situation can be a bit tricky, because you can be charged with DUI.

You should know that police officers are also human beings and their jobs can be very difficult at times. As a result, you need to be very cooperative and polite, if you want the police officer to behave reasonably as well. You should be aware of yourself and avoid incriminating your situation. If the police officer has a good impression on you, it is possible that you will be allowed to leave with only a warning. When you are being pulled over, you should make sure that you are doing it safely. You should slowly negotiate the traffic, so you are able to do things safely. It is important not to annoy the officer and you should make sure that you can make things safer for the officer. As an example, although you need to do things slowly, it doesn’t mean that you can take forever to pull over.  Also, pulling yourself over promptly doesn’t mean that you can do it abruptly, because the safety of others can be jeopardized.

If you seem to behave erratically, the police officer will think that you are potentially a dangerous suspect. The officer will scrutinize you more carefully for any sign of intoxication and possession of illegal items. Whatever your situation is, you should be able to use your soft skills and try to establish a basic interpersonal relationship. This will allow you to negotiate your way more easily and it will be less likely for you to get traffic ticket.  You can be pulled over due to minor issues, such as excessive smoke that billows out of the exhaust or a broken tail light. So, if you are doing nothing wrong, it is important to avoid making your situation more difficult. When the officer approaches your car, he will do that carefully, so it is important to put your hands where the officer can see them. A good practice is to put both your hands on the wheel. This is a good etiquette and the officer will know that he is dealing with a knowledgeable and cooperative individual.
