Home Improvement “how to!”

Home Improvement “how to!”

There are many ways to improve a home, no matter what your budget might be. Small improvements can add up to an overall big improvement over time. Here are some ways that you can give your home a much-needed update or makeover.

Paint

If you do it yourself, painting can be a fast, easy, and inexpensive way to give your home a new look. There are many patterns that can complement your own unique style. A two-tone colour scheme can add a dramatic touch. To accomplish this look, pair a solid darker colour with a lighter colour. You can paint one wall the darker colour for accent or one wall the lighter colour, or paint two walls one colour and two the other.

Create a Guest or Baby Room

Perhaps you have a room that you are using for storage? This space can be easily redone for a guest or child’s room. Even a small room can make a great space for a single person to sleep. There are many types of single bedsteads that can add a stylish and functional touch to your newly created bedroom. Spare rooms make a great space for overnight guests. If you have many visitors or grandchildren that come to stay, a spare bedroom might make the stay much more pleasant for everyone.

Used Furniture Know-how

There is a lot to be said for some older furniture. Many pieces of older furniture were made with superior craftsmanship and style. Wood finishes can often be restored by a simple cleaning and application of a wood finish restorer. If you find a beautiful piece that you want to include in your home but it has a few wobbles to it, then a small application of wood glue and possibly the use of a clamp will soon have it restored to sound condition. You can find quality used furniture by shopping at used furniture stores, antique auctions, and rummage sales. Sometimes you can find a substantial bargain when you least expect it.

Unleash your Inner Creativity

Why not create a unique piece of art for your home? There are many projects for all skill levels. Art can meet function in unique pieces such as a wine glass rack made out of the metal part of an old garden rake. For that project all that is needed is a light cleaning of the metal and painting it with your colour of choice. A bit of sawing and nailing, and you can have a fun organizer made from a used shipping pallet. You can also save a lot of money by framing art yourself, even if that means you just buy a frame and put a piece of art in it yourself.

Reducing Clutter

One easy and very cheap way to improve your home is to reduce clutter from items that you no longer use. Items that you want to discard can be given to charity where they can help improve the lives of other people or animals. Reducing clutter can also help you see your home as a blank canvas and foster more creative ideas for home improvement.
